First 'Star Trek Beyond' Trailer Showcases Action, New Faces And A Little Bit Of Fun

The third installment of the new 'Star Trek' movies found a new director in Justin Lin after J.J. Abrams decide to direct a movie in a galaxy far, far away and now we have our first glimpse into what he has been working on. This 90 second glimpse is about the perfect tease for fans and general movie goers alike to showcase the fun and energy Lin appears to have infused into this franchise.

We get a glimpse of the returning crew including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Simon Pegg as well as a look at the newcomer Sofia Boutella and just maybe the villain being played by Idris Elba, but that one is just a possibility. The trailer opens with some Beastie Boys goodness and then jumps into bits of the story.

It appears that the crew of the Enterprise don't have the Enterprise anymore and are possibly split up at some point in the movie. There are some shots of different pairings that we haven't seen including McCoy and Spock trekking (see what I did there?) off somewhere together and then jump into some action sequences. We get a look at Boutella's currently unnamed character who appears to be a pretty radical race of alien with fantastic makeup bringing the character to life.

I personally don't think the below image is of Idris Elba as the physical build of this character doesn't quite line up with Elba's stocky frame. I could certainly be wrong as lighting and angles can seriously alter a characters size, but we'll see. Either way, there are some serious makeup effects in this movie and they appear to be done flawlessly. With numerous new aliens not shown in the previous two films there should be plenty for fans to geek out over this summer.

We'll find out for sure how Lin does as a director here when 'Star Trek Beyond' hits theaters on July 22nd. Will this be 'Fast and Furious' in space or can he return to this series' proper form with a balance of action and exploration? I'm hoping for the latter but some of the former sprinkled in could be pretty damn fun!
